The technique of carving murti out of marble was developed in the Jaipur Moorti. It involved carving a block of white marble from a quarry. Marble blocks were transported from the quarry to the workshop where they were first roughly shaped into a rough form of the desired image, then further refined with hammers and chisels. Some special tools were also developed for carving marble. The sculptor may begin by forming its nose, eyes, and other parts of the face. The different pieces are then joined together by metal pins or laced together with leather thongs. As it nears completion the artist may smooth out its surface with pumice or polish it to a shining luster by rubbing it with oil and finely powdered stone.
